In a significant development, Ravneet Kaur, a 1988 Punjab cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The long-awaited decision comes after the post remained vacant since October 2022 when Ashok Kumar Gupta stepped down from office. Kaur's appointment was made official by the government through an order issued on May 15.
Prior to Kaur's appointment, CCI Member Sangeeta Verma had been fulfilling the responsibilities of the Chairperson on an acting basis since October of the previous year. With Ravneet Kaur assuming the role, the competition regulator now has a full-time leader to guide its operations and decision-making processes.
Kaur's appointment as the Chairperson of CCI is for a tenure of five years, starting from the date she assumes charge. However, it will cease upon reaching the age of 65 years or until further orders, whichever comes first, as per the official order.
The order also outlined the remuneration for the new Chairperson. Ravneet Kaur will receive a consolidated salary of Rs 4,50,000 per month, excluding additional benefits such as housing and a car.
